Scrapling: Sell Competitor Price Alerts to Online Stores

Track rivals’ prices and stock with a free scraper, and sell the alerts as a monthly service.

Online stores lose sales when a competitor quietly drops a price or runs out of stock and nobody notices for a week. Scrapling, a free web scraper, lets you watch those competitors for them and turn it into a monthly service.

What Scrapling is

Scrapling is an open-source Python framework for collecting data from websites, from a single page to a full crawl. It has 69.1k stars on GitHub and a permissive BSD-3-Clause license.

Its selling point is staying power. Most scrapers break the moment a site changes its layout. Scrapling uses what it calls smart element tracking to find the same price or stock label again after a redesign.

  • Gets past bot walls: a stealth mode handles protections such as Cloudflare Turnstile.
  • Survives redesigns: adaptive parsing relocates the data you asked for when a page changes.
  • Crawls at scale: Scrapy-style spiders with pause and resume.
  • Works with AI assistants: a built-in MCP server lets Claude pull data from sites on request.
  • No-code option: a command-line tool extracts data without writing a script.

The service: weekly competitor price and stock alerts

You track five of a client's rivals, put their prices and stock status in a Google Sheet, and alert the client whenever a price drops or an item sells out. The client can then reprice within minutes instead of finding out a week later.

Who buys it: Shopify and direct-to-consumer brands with 50–500 products, roughly $1–10 million a year in sales, and at least 3–5 named competitors.

Pricing and costs

The video suggests $500 to set up and $300 a month to run it. Your costs are about $40 a month for proxies and a small server.

Clients Setup fees Monthly recurring
1 $500 $300
10 $5,000 $3,000

Upkeep is estimated at around 10 hours a month for 10 clients.

How to find clients

  1. Search for US companies that use Shopify and have 5–50 employees; that headcount usually means seven- or eight-figure sales.
  2. Target founders, owners and e-commerce managers, and get verified emails from a people-search tool.
  3. Lead with proof: send a screenshot of a real price drop by one of their rivals.

Getting started

  1. Install it: pip install "scrapling[fetchers]" (Python 3.10 or newer).
  2. Point it at each competitor's product pages and save price and stock to a sheet.
  3. Schedule it to run daily and send an alert when a value changes.

Watch-outs

  • Scrape public product pages only, and respect each site's terms and request limits.
  • Proxies are a real monthly cost; include them in your price.
  • Check the alerts by hand for the first few weeks before you promise clients "within minutes".
